Native American skull discovered


An avid Indian artifact hunter discovered a rare find on the banks of the 102 River just north of Barnard on August 19.

The item was an early American Indian skull stuck in a sandbar along the tributary.
The investigation was performed locally by the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department, Nodaway County Coroner’s Office and the Missouri Highway Patrol DDCC.
Once the skull was unearthed, it was sent to Dr. Michael Finnegan, a forensics anthropologist at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS.
Finnegan reported back to the Sheriff’s Department that it was a 35-45 year old man’s skull dating back to the 1800s.
He also said he would alert the Missouri State Historical Preservation Office, which is part of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, to this discovery. There has been no word yet on where the skull may be housed.
